Hickman hits the landing! I'm leaving happy. Are there a couple of things I could be persnickety about? Sure, maybe a couple, but whatever. It was a great ride and I'm fully satisfied.

A bittersweet ending. I confess I wanted something more grand to happen. The build-up was amazing and finally having arrived here where everyone's facing off and we see how the apocalypse will turn out, it's kind of just... okay.
Spoiler LOVE CONQUERS ALL??? I MEAN.. I SAW IT COMING but damn that's really cliched. Also, I would've really wanted to see Babylon actually being the Great Beast and unleashing hell on all mankind. But I guess that would've taken longer.
Nevertheless, for the life of me, I just couldn't rate this anything less than what I'm giving it because I REAALLY HAD A GOOD TIME reading this whole series. It was fun and had an amazing plot AND art.

So, yes, I highly recommend East of West. I breezed through it and I don't regret having stumbled upon this masterpiece.

The previous three volumes of this series got a bit rocky. They were still good, but I wasn't engrossed in the story, I was reading in hopes that the book would reach up to the potential I imagined from the first couple of volumes. And it mostly did.

The main battle that the series has been building up to since the first issue was somwehat anti-climactic, and shouldn't have been the focus of the series. The human portion of the apocalypse was much more interesting. Likewise, The Beast unmasking, a physical reveal, not A Shocking Reveal, was fine but it led to an ending I didn't really believe in.

But the warring nations' battles, and Wolf's story made me glad I stuck with this series. It's not Hickman's best, but it is still very good.

If you like post-apocalyptic stories with gorgeous art and interesting political machinations, this is a Definite Must Read. Also, if you're looking for modern Westerns with a sci-fi bent.

An enjoyable book. My only major complaint about the series is its leaving out the rest of the world. I think the apocalypse would affect more than only North America.

--read as single issues #43-#45--

This volume will contain only three issues, though issue #45 is a double-length installment, so it should not differ much in size from the four-issue books they've been collecting of late. It is, obviously, hard to review this final volume without spoiling a great deal of the story, but needless to say things that were heating up in volume nine are now at full boil, as our remaining players in this bizarre and prophesied game begin to butt heads. The pace is violently fast, fitting of the end of this story, and the end came quicker than I'd have liked. But one can hope for only one thing at the end of a story like this, as there is only one appropriate response. That most powerful of underlying universal forces. That thing which though it may seem absent on a battlefield of massive engagement, or in the apocalyptic battles of Death himself, is nevertheless there, if you open your eyes (or take off your helmet) and look: Love.

It is always a bittersweet feeling to come to the end of a story you've spent a lot of time with.. I have been reading East of West for five years now, and it has become something I can rely on for a good story whenever it lands at the shop (even when it landed very late). The entire creative team deserves accolades, but especially Jonathan Hickman's writing of this bizarre and violent world, Nick Dragotta's drawing of it, and Frank Martin's coloring of it (which I have on occasion noted as being particularly brilliant). They created a fun book these past five years; a strange and complicated alternate America. I believe the series is currently in one stage or another of adaptation. If it ever sees the light of day it will be an exciting and worthwhile endeavor. But for now, it's goodbye.

This is the world. It is not the one we wanted, but it is the one we deserved.

That was exactly the ending I would have picked if I had the ability to create like Hickman.
Just enough bitter, just enough sweet, just enough hope.
Perfect.

A good ending to my favorite series of the last few years.
