Well, this kind of disappointed me, especially after Skyward was one of my favorite books that I read last year.

The choice to take Spensa (and M-Bot and Doomslug) away from her interesting and well done supporting cast and deposit her far away, giving her an alien and ultimately less appealing new supporting cast, probably did the book in for me. I like Spensa, but I also like Cobb and Kimmalyn and, most of all, Jorgen. I wanted to read their stories, not those of a new set of characters who I had no interest in and continued to have no interest in throughout the book. It just seemed like a poor choice to me to build up there's characters and their struggles and Spensa's bond with them, only for them to be in maybe fifty pages.

Maybe it comes as no surprise that the last part of the book was my favorite out of all of it because that was what I wanted out of Starsight, not 300+ pages of Spensa doing training exercises with a group of characters I didn't care for.

I'm going to give the next book a shot, but this book really made my general interest in the series go way down. It'll probably be a while before I venture into the Cyverse again, though.

Starsight took the little nuggets of info we got in Skyward and ran with them! This book expanded on the universe so much, and I absolutely loved it.

The new cast of characters were so fun to get to know (though I will say that I missed Jerkface and Quirk). Also, Spensa learned so much about her internal biases and WE LOVE AN ANTIRACIST MESSAGE! Whoop whoop!

M-bot continues to be such a funny character, and the themes of consciousness and self determinism were so interesting to explore through his lens. I also love Doomslug, she’s such a good slug, and am excited to spend more time with her in the next books.

This series is so bingeable, and I will definitely be reading the novellas asap. I’m not sure what exactly kept this from being a dove star book for me, but it didn’t have ~the vibe~ so it gets a solid 4.5 stars.

Not as fast paced and fun as first one but that’s mostly because it’s the second book and had to world build and build up towards the third book. I’m amazed at how complex a story the author can create.
