This felt like Book Two, as if I’d missed something about how this world works, or how magic works in this world. Perhaps that was the point.
I couldn’t feel engaged to any of the characters, and wasn’t at all concerned that ‘bad things’ might happen.
Not inspired to read anything else by this author, although my husband thinks he’s wonderful! 🤷🏼♀️

I was completely enthralled with Trip to the Stars. Though there were moments of intrigue and beauty in Veronica, i found the reading experience to be disjointed and shallow.
I picked up a used copy of Veronica based solely on the praise found on its cover, knowing nothing about the novel or the author. I was pleasantly surprised by the book, and can honestly say that it was like nothing I've ever read before. I do read a bit of fantasy, but Veronica is different in that the plot is grounded very firmly in New York City. It's what happens in the city to Leo, an innocent bystander who gets caught up in a whirlwind of magic and time-travel, that's the fantastic part. Though I found the novel to be innovative and the plot intriguing, I found Mr. Cristopher's writing style a bit repetitive and forced. I don't want to spoil the book for anyone who might be wanting to read it, but the ending leaves one wondering what exactly happened to Veronica and Leo -- it's one of those endings I'm dying to discuss with someone else who's read the book. A fun, yet thoughtful, escape from reality.
I'm not sure what I just read, but I think I enjoyed it. This book is a crazy mix of The Night Circus, The Prestige, maybe Twin Peaks and a dash or text-based adventure? It is hard to describe. It is intriguing, fast-faced paced, baffling and a tad pretentious. Excited to read his other books.
4 stars is a conservative rating. I fully intend to reread this, and may up it to 5 if it holds together. This is every bit an adult version of "that story" you read when you were 10 years old, and reread and reread.... It has adventure, romance, OMG what is going to happen, beautiful imagery, repetition of themes that seemingly (to be proven or disproven with a rereading) have great meaning and portent. I loved every bit of this.
Only downside, I had Elvis Costello's "Veronica" stuck in my head for days. :) not really a bad thing...

A white guy falls in love with a mysterious girl who’s always just out of reach of understanding with a face like an unsolvable puzzle that also reminds him of his mother? Sounds like every relationship with a man with mommy issues ever. The magic part was pretty cool but my god was this a tough read like wtf is the point of this book? Freud wins yet again 😔 also spoiler warning but the only character I liked was the dog and he dies for the worst main character I have ever seen. #justiceforthedog
Maybe this isn't a fair rating since I put the book down after 3 chapters. Who are these people and why would anyone care enough about them to read the whole book? A total lack of any kind of character development. I'd rather take a nap.
