A perfect book for :
  • anyone wanting to read more nonbinary voices
  • people who would like introductory information about those who are gender nonconforming
  • teens who would like to have conversations with the people in their life (and maybe the inner doubting voice in their head).

This is a quick read, clearly written, and it does a great job dismantling misconceptions.

I know this book has been challenged in at least one school system (though thankfully the challenge was rejected), and it's beyond frustrating that we're still fighting for people to freely exist and access the information they need.

Wow! For such a short book, this was phenomenal. I loved how well it worded things I’ve been thinking or saying for so long. It made me feel seen. And valid. This was incredible.

The 5 star is because I really can't fault it for what it is. Obviously it's tiny and I want now, but it's meant to be small and approachable, so I'm done with that. Knowing that, I think it was a good mix of some personal info and presenting what should be basic information in a digestible way. It didn't read like a reference book which is really what it is because Vaid-Menon has such a strong, beautiful voice. I also really appreciated the metaphors and other ways of explaining concepts that were fresh and clear while also not being offensive for people who would most need to read this book. Not that they will but hey some might!

Alok Vaid-Menon is a global treasure and I want them to write more books please.

This is my second time reading “Beyond the Gender Binary” and I plan to read it twice a year moving forward because it’s important and very accessible. It is making me a better ally and activist.
