This is my favorite of the Circle of Magic books. I love the expanded world building and deeper look into the lives of the kids outside of their training. The very real feeling of how craftsmen are trained, blacksmithing in Daja's case and how the people around them react to it. I really enjoy the further peak into Trader culture in this book and the sheer diversity in the cast in this series.  The little snippets about the Teachers past, and the little interactions given between the adults gives this a little more depth than the first two. I also like that it's less of a OMG climax, and is instead just a really real threat. Though considering this storyline focuses on fire, maybe not the most sensitive of reading, regarding the current events in Hawaii. All in all, a very good read, and I always enjoy this book.

I listened to the previous books as audiobook and I think I prefer them that way. I enjoyed it, but it didn't stick with me very strongly.

"At that moment, Daja thought, she would cheerfully die for any of her three friends."

I love love love the found family here so much. This book they actually referred to each other as family, and I love their relationship and how close they are. I love how they chose to stay bound together instead of having Sandry weave their magics into separate entities completely because they knew their circle was too important to them to separate, even though they knew they needed to untangle their magics.

The climax scene was super intense this book - not that it isn't always, but here it seemed especially dramatic. This wasn't my favorite book in the series, but I still enjoyed it, and the audio was excellent as always. Onto the next installment!
