Early Alyssa Cole, rough around the edges, but I hadn't heard this narrative before

Enjoyable and super quick read. I would have enjoyed a full length novel exploring this particular aspect of the Revolutionary War.

If they had a nickel for every time they met with a dead body between them...it would be a concerning number of nickels

This is a pretty intense level of trauma for a novella of this length, and while I loved the history, the romance fell pretty flat for me. I've definitely read some much better work from Alyssa Cole

Short but oh so sweet, I love a noble hero like Elijah and the relationship with Kate was cleverly drawn over a short space of time, not easy to achieve with a novella. I was also clueless about the role African Americans played in the American Revolution, so it was fascinating to learn this piece of history, along with the significance of the title.

Look, this is everything I love. The meeting, the setting, the characters. It filled me with so many feelings in just under 100 pages.

Between 4 and 5 stars. This novella has been on my TBR list for a couple of years, and I'm so glad I finally read it. It's a very straightforward story, and I found the happy ending really heartwarming. I have not read many books set during the Revolutionary War, so I liked the novelty of that. I was surprised at how easy it was for me to get caught up in Elijah's idealism about the promise of America.

My only criticism is that the writing style is a little bit stilted, which took me out of the story a few times. But I haven't noticed that problem in this author's other work at all, so maybe this was one of her first published stories, or maybe I'm just grumpy.

Overall, this is a good and comforting read.

Most short stories are rushed, this one is no different. It was a good story, I wanted more of a fairy tale ending. This however was more realistic.

Short but still very touching. The mix of hope and cynicism the characters expressed was appealingly realistic.

It was wonderful, if a bit bittersweet, to read this at the same time as [b:Hamilton's Battalion: A Trio of Romances|36242916|Hamilton's Battalion A Trio of Romances|Courtney Milan|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1506806595s/36242916.jpg|57888058], as one of the MCs in the author's story in that collection is connected to this story.

I read this for an American Revolution aspect of a challenge, and I have to admit, it really had me thinking! I liked how it detailed each of their motivations for their decisions, and have to say the story had me really enraptured from the get go. I found it easy to connect with Elijah and Kate, and enjoyed most of their romance. It was a bit insta-lovey for me, a trope I strongly dislike in romance, but due to the shortened nature of the book, I understood it. I would highly recommend this for an Independence Day read!
