As I said in my review of Pomona, read earlier and re-read in this compendium, McDowell has been lauded as the best new English playwright to come along this decade. His first three plays do not quite reach the heights of the later play, and bear some unmistakable resemblances to the early works of Philip Ridley. Still, his latest play, X (also read prior to this collection) shows progress and it is thrilling to contemplate where McDowall's career will head next. [PS I think it worth noting that there are NO female characters in any of the first three plays - and he has been criticized for the lack of depth in the female characters of his later plays.}
