I enjoyed this book more than the previous - Reapers. Parker is investigating his past, with shocking and spooky results! Worth a read, but would like to have seen more of louis and angel.

This latest installment in the Charlie Parker series takes us on a dark journey, what's new I hear you ask, all of John Connolly's books take us on dark journeys. This one, however, explores the past of Charlie himself and the mysteries surrounding his birth and the suicide of his father, it also goes some way to explain why evil is drawn to him like a moth to a flame. Gripping right from the first page with what at first seems like an unconnected story, this book will keep you turning the pages until before you know it you are at the last chapter. With cameo appearances from the enigmatic Angel and Louis and reintroducing characters from previous books John Connolly is once again on top form. This book keeps you wanting more and right at the very end there is the hint of a new romance for Charlie, so I for one can't wait for the next installment to see what journey Charlie, Louis and Angel will be taking us on.

I actually loved this latest installment to the Charlie "Bird" Parker series by John Connolly. The only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars is that I love to have Angel and Louis in the story more and missed them terribly here. But this book took the storyline closer to the truth with many revealing facts that is best left unsaid, lest I leave spoilers.

Charlie had lost his PI license in the last book and is now bartending and leaving him plenty of time to follow up on what actually happend to his father and why did his dad kill that couple years ago and then himself. So many holes to be filled and Charlie plans on getting at the truth.

Love how this expanded the books' mythology and finally gave us answers to very important questions. The pace was slightly different than usual, but it worked quite well in my opinion.

I did something last night that I haven't done in a long time on a work night - stayed up until I finished my book even though I knew I would hate life in the morning on the way to work. In fact, I pretty much read this book all day once I took care of the unimportant stuff like pancakes, groceries, & procrastinating doing the laundry. This isn't a surprise, though. John Connolly's books are just that good.

This is the latest in his Charlie Parker series wherein Charlie learns some truths about his father's suicide & his own parentage. As always, Charlie is violence haunted & cursed, fumbling in the darkness for something that remains as unknown to himself as it is to his readers. This was a wonderful book with the tight plotting, great characterization, & beautiful writing that you expect from a Connolly book.

I especially appreciate how well he fleshes out even minor characters, like the Fulci brothers. Angel & Louis, his two closest friends, make a brief appearance here - I find I miss them terribly & hope they'll be back in the next book.

People frequently comment on the paranormal happenings in these books & I always have to pause & think about that ("Are there paranormal things in this book?"). The pause is because Connolly makes these happenings a normal part of life - the only person other than Neil Gaiman who manages that as well as he does. These are also among the only books that have given me nightmares as an adult (in company with Alan Moore's Watchmen - good company, indeed).

Connolly also happens to put words together beautifully. There are parts of Dark Hollow that are so achingly beautiful you want to cry from reading them.

If you haven't read these books, what are you waiting for? Get going!

A great read. Well written, fast paced and suspenseful. The cRime novel at its best.

It had grown increasingly obvious with each Charlie Parker book that this is no ordinary detective procedural series. Each book has been slowly and subtly building on the previous ones, building up a mythology that suddenly comes roaring out in full force in book #8. The Lovers serves up answers and more mysteries and is a rewarding experience for any longtime Charlie Parker fan. I'm slightly despairing at the fact that I've now almost caught up with the current point in the series, which means that after I finish the one sitting on my nightstand, I'll have to wait until 2011 for the next one.
