I enjoy the way the illustrator uses quilting squares as flashback scenes and the art looks like it was done by an animator - surprise, because it was! - so there’s a nice movement along the pages. A beautiful story about a tradition that it’s nice to learn about.

Hmm. I like the idea. The artwork and the text are truly beautiful. But I don't think the execution and combination of the two is successful. The story of Asiya unpacking the quilts and hearing stories is really sweet but then between quilts we have more block print vignette style pictures to convey the life the quilt led before it became a quilt and was worn as a sari. I suspect these pieces would make more sense if I was of this culture (I realize I assumed India but not even sure if that's true) but to make the book have the same mileage for readers outside of the culture I wish there was some kind of backmatter with a timeline or other details--especially since there was already a note from the author and illustrator.

A beautiful story of family and family keepsakes.
I bet many children and adults have stories about those items that are kept at a grandparent's house that holds family sentimental value.
