I like Jase Graham. He's a bit of a struggle in this one, but he gets better. And the dynamic of Bren trying to teach him is fascinating. Stupid Heritage Party. So good though!

The first book in the trilogy was a bit slow to start and frustrating, since it’s just pages and pages of Bren being totally bewildered, but it keeps getting
better from there. Still mostly a lot of being inside Bren’s head, but it’s a more entertaining place when he has a better grasp of what’s going on. All the politics and subtle maneuvering and the ongoing struggle to truly communicate effectively with Atevi (and in turn how being immersed in Atevi culture makes it hard for Bren to communicate with humans) are extremely my shit.

Not as strong as the first two books, mainly because of it's pacing. It starts slowly and wanders along for a long time, then late in the book starts moving. It's pretty much over when it whips through a climax and resolution in a startlingly short number of pages. To boot, the authour seems to pull a few rabbits out of hats to get it to all hang together.

The character development is quite enjoyable, and the expanded background welcome.

Enjoyable, just not as stand out as the start of the series.

Less personal than the previous volumes, but another excellent continuation of the Foreigner series.

This volume focuses on Bren's relationship with Jase, with a rather exciting development with Jago as well! There are the usual twists and turns, with this volume diving more into the complex in-universe politics. A few chapters are intentionally written to leave one's head spinning. While these are fun to untangle for oneself, these especially dense sections are summarized afterwards for convenience.
As seems tradition now, the narrative spirals into chaos before concluding in an ever so heart-warming ending.

Very good, but not quite that of previous volumes. Quite a bit of foreshadowing that I am excited to see unfold!

3.5-ish.

I'm glad that some of my complaints during the book were addressed (namely Bren being pretty hypocritical with Jase, and Jase's weird mood swings), but I've detected a pattern in the books that I'm not sure I want to continue with.
SpoilerThe trips through forests with Ilsidi are fine and all, but...surely there's a different way to resolve each book.
Things came to a head too quickly, I really wanted to explore those repercussions more.

Also, and always: needs more Tabini.

The party scene was pretty much the best in the book. More of the political intrigue stuff where people talk to each other, and Bren isn't just wandering in his own head!
