A very well-written book from start to finish. Clarice's unique ability and identity as a woman was highlighted when the author noted that almost all the investigators are men while all but one victims are women. Clarice is not only a woman, but have ability to sympathize with the victims and keen understanding of human nature. I love her character, Jack Crawford, and their interactions.

this happens to be a rare case where I slightly prefer the movie over the book, and it’s because the latter definitely aged worse over time. the amount of fatphobic language and cultural references of its time never really let up, it was almost distracting 🥴

however, everything else about this hits the perfect mix of serial killer chills and thrills. I love how much hannibal indulges writing letters to his friends, and never in my life have I read a more TERRIFYING chapter in a book than the chapter describing a basement.

I listened to the audiobook which I had to double check to make sure wasn’t narrated by Anthony Hopkins himself…Frank Muller did a phenomenal job narrating and really added to the experience for someone who loved the film and was worried they wouldn’t enjoy the book as much.

Hannibal Lecter: period blood eyes, teeth like a row of tic-tacs, built like a ballerina, and no taller than five-foot-two.

showed its age more than red dragon, but i found clarice starling a bit more compelling than will graham. can definitely tell harris has grown to like certain characters more, and he writes thrillers like a journalist - extreme attention to detail, almost pedantic at times. except in the matters of women’s weight - “she was a large woman - 145 pounds!! so hefty!!!” listen i get it was the eighties and everyone was on stuff but come onnnnn thomas
