So this was certainly an emotional and good enough book but it didn't blow my mind away and it was kind of depressing at times. Also I really expected something different.

Loved this book. Layers upon layers of stories, connected. Excellent character development, story spans from Afghanistan to Europe and across 20 th century. A must read!

One of the better books I have read this year. Hosseini shows again what an acute and sensitive writer he can be for both male and female characters. The themes of family sacrifice and separation hold together the stories of several different characters, all connected in some way that is revealed through the book. I cried at the end, as I have for his previous 2 books.

This was not as good as his others, had a really hard time getting into the story.

Some parts were disjointed and it felt a bit disconnected, but the writing was really beautiful and the individual stories were quite moving.

3.5 stars rounded up - This is a beautifully writing, heartbreaking and heartwarming both. I rounded up because this is possibly one too many novels by Khaled Hosseini for me. I loved The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns - the boys and the girls respectively. But at times I felt I was just reading another version of both. I will chalk it up to not being in the right frame of mind for this one and not discourage anyone from picking this one up. Hosseini is a talented written with a wonderful storytelling style.

The shifts in perspectives and jumps in time provide an interesting juxtaposition against some enduring themes of family, everlasting love and loyalty, and heartbreak. I can't say enough just how much this story, and the way it was told, means to me.
