Noting my rating and brief thoughts as I have no time to write a full review.

Lots to think about in this book - including it's brutal representation of culture (all culture - not just Islamic culture, which is the typical criticism I see here). I actually love what the author is doing here - this book and series is not about demons or demon war. It's about people - and thank god. Because the demon stuff is probably the most trope-tastic part of the series.

I actually loved this book and it's exploration of misogyny and power. And how power and control is exercised - over men, women, warriors, "common folks", religion - all of it. Very well done and since it made me pause and think I'm giving it an enthusiastic 5 stars.

Further, I really need to see POV from some Krasian women. I think the author is going to shift focus and 'lead character' for each book. Book 1 was Arlen - this one is Jardir. Can't wait to see who we get in Book 3 - I have a strong sense that it'll be Jardir's wife. And I can't wait. I can see the pattern the author is weaving and I am there for it.

I was initially disappointed at the choice of focus in the first half of the book but it quickly grew on me.

This is a solid edition to the Warded Man, picking up the character development beautifully.

Remember [b:The Warded Man|3428935|The Warded Man (Demon Cycle, #1)|Peter V. Brett|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1354571949s/3428935.jpg|6589794]? The greatest thing about that book was the process of becoming the heroes that Arlen, Leesha, and Rojer were destined to be.

Peter Brett does it again. He starts over. For real. He goes back to the beginning and shows us how Jardir, the Shar'Dama Ka, became the shitheel he was destined to become. Interestingly, it's another hero's journey. I guess it's the antihero's journey. But it's damned good.

And little Renna Tanner. She now has a destiny and we go back to the horrors of her childhood to figure out why she's becoming the important character she's also destined to be.

And, in the midst of this Arlen and Jardir have a confrontation to attend. So, the first half of the book is a retelling and the second half continues our story. And I didn't mind. That's how good Brett is at this storytelling business. He took me back and retold me the same story and I ate it up like a shill at the carnival. And I want more?

Carry on, Mr. Brett. Let's see what more you have.
