The story kept repeating itself and the characters didn't seem to grow even as we went through generations and--worst of all-- for some reason, we kept returning to violence against women in a very nonchalant way. Why do that as a female author? It didn't really move the plot along, just kind of felt desensitizing against that kind of violence. I had to stop reading when the third generation of woman got put into a situation like that.

I did like the magical realism aspect but perhaps this book had been too hyped up to me by people I trust for it to have lived up to that expectation.

The House of the Spirits was an experience. I am glad I read it, but it was a lot. I loved the magical realism, but more telling than showing and the lack of dialogue made it drag. However, it did pique my interest in reading more South American authors and learning more about South American history. Read if you enjoy: magical realism, multi-generational sagas, women in translation
