My favorite book of all time. Reading the stories of two women of different generations and upbringings in Afghanistan, I was blown away by Hosseini’s ability to convey what it is like to be a woman. Content warnings should be taken seriously. This book is difficult and raw, but it is also the most touching and tender book I have read

I think this is the best book I’ve ever read. The author has the wonderful ability to evoke emotions, to portray the most cruel and unspeakable events and make you feel hopeful still, hopeful that everything will turn out okay.

trying and failing so hard to not bawl my eyes out. jesus christ. this book left me so broken but also so inspired. the events in this felt too close to what’s happening today and left me heartbroken. this book is honestly a must read for all. be prepared to cry a lot in this book. 5/5 stars

This wasn’t an easy read. It moved well and I felt a need to keep reading, but it was emotionally very heavy. The struggles Mariam and Laila went through are something I could never imagine and made me very grateful to live in the US.

On a higher level, I feel like growing up I didn’t learn much about the war in Afghanistan let alone the Soviet occupation. This book taught me about the history while telling a compelling story which I really appreciated.

I would read this again with the emotional weight I takes in mind and will be adding the other books by this author to my TBR.
