This has a lot of the same elements that I enjoyed from the previous two instalments of this series, but this one felt a bit rushed and lacking in connection. It’s incredibly fast-paced — I think it would have benefitted from giving the characters more time to be fleshed out and the plot more space to breathe. I also didn’t care for the constant pop culture references.

It’s definitely more of a heist book than a romance novel- which, with a title like ‘Renegade Love’, you’d expect the romance to be a focus. So I didn’t get what I wanted out of it. If you’re looking for a quirky heist sci-fi with a side of romance and too much description of lizard dick, this book is for you. It gives Mandolorian fanfic vibes. For a 293 page digital book, this dragged on forever and I only finished it so I could add this too my read books.

A super fun, lighthearted read. I've been using these books as "palate cleansers" while I read through some heavier stuff. While I LOVED Oren, and his discovery that he can indeed care about someone. I missed the slow burn and exploration of love that the other two books do so well. Over all, I've been really enjoying Ann Aguirre's writing and plan to seek out more of her works.

For me, Renegade Love falls above Love Code but below Strange Love. I enjoyed the fun space romp of a story, pretty good characters, and one last shot at exploring this setting and world-building. The ending was pretty satisfactory and I was a sucker for the Leverage references (hell yes, top favorite shows!). I liked that there was some tie-in to the previous books in this one and would have actually loved a little more connection. Then again, I would also love like 3 more books in this universe!

All in all, I think my only real gripe was about how quickly Oren went from being wary of Yara to instantly being ride or die with full trust and faith in her. The book had been building it up a little but could have done with a bit more, or maybe better establish reason for the sudden change with some of Oren's thoughts and fears at how quickly he was giving in himself. Something!

Yara had been firmly established from the start as pretty rolling-with-it philosophy on life, the manifestation of "Adult life is already so goddamn weird." and "You know those days when you're like 'this might as well happen.'", so it made sense when she was shrugging and leaning into the alien romance. Even knowing that, we still get her expressing some low-level fears and concerns (and excitement) to herself at the prospect of a relationship in a way we didn't really get with Oren and it made even less sense to not get that from Oren's point of view.

Anyway, Oren sounded like a sad little cutie and Yara was a hoot and I wish them a very merry happily ever after. I loved the bots in this story, the surprise character was kinda cool but so much more could have been done there too, and seeing another Greenspirit was fun! Overall, a good solid read and I would totally read more if Ann Aguirre writes any more set in this universe.
