The writing is fine and the story is ok. But I don’t know what is it just feels odd and over the top and just trying to hard to be a real grim hard hitting crime novel with REAL people dealing with REAL lives. I found some of the policemen’s lives way too over the top. Ugh I am getting sick to death with all family members getting either hurt or attacked or kidnapped it’s a bit ludicrous.

A Penguin First to Read ARC e-book in exchange for an honest review.

This book was so disturbing.

Second in the Holger Munch and Mia Kruger series, I felt like I missed a lot of character development from not reading the first one. The plot itself though can be read as a standalone.

A young woman is found murdered in a ritualistic manner with no forensic evidence to be found. Mia is struggling with inner demons and Holger drags her back from death to work on the case.

There are no physical leads until a hacker uncovers a copy of what was once live video footage in the deepest darkest part of the Internet, of a young girl trapped in hell.

This is not action packed or fast paced but it still manages to horrify you.

i was looking for something dark and gritty and bjork definitely delivered. i hadn't heard of him or the series before, so i read this book as a standalone. i thought that it worked reasonably well for that purpose, but i just.... did not like this book. if there was ever a novel i had to drag myself through, it was this one. the plot is insanely jumbled and the characterization is a mess. we meet a ton of people and hardly get to know any of them. why do we need 10+ different perspectives?! two or three are more than enough for a novel of this length. i liked jim, isabella, and gabriel, and they are introduced as narrators only to be shoved aside after a dozen pages or so. i wanted to like and feel sorry for mia, but the way that everyone else is constantly fawning over her (so beautiful! so brilliant! so talented!) made me more irritated than anything. i guess my biggest qualm is the glaring lack of resolution at the end of the book - yes, the cops catch the Big Bad(s), but i feel cheated. what was the point of mentioning holger's headaches if they didn't lead to anything? did ziggy really care for miriam or was he a willing participant in jacob's crime? why didn't mia know how the investigation ended? it's unrealistic to expect answers for everything and i'm not looking for a tidy bow on it all, but i'm just feeling like... what was the point? what did i get out of reading this book? at least i got my fix for sick and twisted.
