This was a really fun children's historical mystery. The setting of the ship was so atmospheric and the characters were great. It's inspired by Mary's journey from India at the beginning of The Secret Garden which I found interesting.
I first found Ella Risbridger through her memoir/cookbook Midnight Chicken and then read her poetry anthology Set Me On Fire and didn't know what to expect from this because it's obviously completely different. However I thought her writing style was brilliant and perfectly suited to a classic feeling children's book. It reminded me of a lot of books I read when I was a child and I know I'd have loved it then.
