"She remembered a great deal. But was unable to say what it was. The birds had picked the words clean."

My 5 favorites of all time had settled into place some years ago. This year they would have all been reread. One has been shifted out of position.

I cannot close this up. And know that I am 'done' with it.

"She sat at the window watching through narrowed hungry eyes the birds that fed on the dead bodies of the Parsees. At night she blew dandelion clocks and continued to blow them long after they had become bereft, deprived. To blow them to the bone was the one sure way she now had of sleeping, sure in the Lord and the resurrection and the spade. "

The review of The Towers of Silence you can read here.

The title of the last part of The Raj Quartet series comes from Isaias' proverb:

Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.
Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly than to divide the spoil with the proud.

The story describes the decamping of the British from India in the period of 1947-48. The main character is Guy Perron who became an observer of India on the eve of Independence.

There is a tragic event which describes the turbulent India-Pakistan partition thus ending this magnificent saga written by Paul Scott.

Only the first book of this series was dramatized at TV, The Jewel in the Crown (1984).
