As good on the second reading as on the first!
Governess Jean Muir arrives at the Coventry household on foot after a scandal at her previous household. Head of the household Gerald initially takes a dislike to her but Jean sets about winning over each member of the family. This is a great novella from Louisa May Alcott (writing as AM Barnard) featuring much scheming, plotting, and Victorian bitchiness. I think it's best to go into this without knowing much. Jean Muir is an unforgettable character - crafty and absolutely driven, I was behind her all the way.
