3.5 stars, kind of an interesting (obvi fictional) parallel tale of two pairs of women from the past and present dealing with controlling men and writing stories about murders that happened in an italian villa. there was really nothing else special about it but its not like it was horrible to listen to either

I really enjoyed this book. Everything about it worked so well: the setting, the characters, the dual timeline, the sunny horror vibe. The ending was entirely unexpected, which I found delightful and which cast the rest of the book in a very different light.

The book started out strong and engaging but the finish wasn't what I had hoped for.

i was a bit hesitant to pick this up because i really disliked the author’s previous book, but i’m so glad i decided to give it a chance. because this just worked. the atmosphere, the vibe, the two different stories that mirror each other in many ways, the stories and art within the book, the characters and how flawed and human they were, and the writing was just *chef’s kiss*. i hesitate to call this a mystery/thriller, even though there is technically a murder at the center of the story, but i don’t really know what else i would classify it as. but damn i loved it. julia whelan(the narration queen) narrates this audiobook, which was the reason i decided to pick it up, and her storytelling brings the experience to a new height. highly recommend the audiobook if you enjoy them.
