It's been a while since I read a book set in France, and I loved this perspective of an Algerian high school teacher. The discussion around France's obsession with secularity was super interesting, as was the insight into a schooling system which does not do enough to support its more vulnerable students. A dark humour runs through this book, which probably would have landed better if I had read it in print - sometimes the narrator's impressions (especially of female characters) were jarring.
Moderate: Islamophobia, Medical content, Racism, and Death of parent
Minor: Abortion and Infertility
