To be honest, at first I could NOT get into this book, and almost DNF’d it, but my mom read it last year and encouraged me to keep going. And I’m so glad I did! This book ended up checking all the boxes for what I like in a thriller:
- a moody and atmospheric setting
- A sense of dread that keeps on building
- Plot twists that keep you guessing
- Audiobook narrated by the author
My only complaints were with the beginning and ending of the book, which both dragged on a bit and didn’t seem to fit with the rest of the mood of this book. But otherwise I would definitely recommend this one to add to your summer thriller list and I can’t wait to read more by Catherine Steadman!

I enjoyed this read for the most part. It was a fun summery beachside thriller and like a good thriller movie/show it was the sort of read where you’re brought along on a journey and you’re often yelling at the characters with the decisions they make and the risks they allow all in the pursuit of curiosity, wealth, and a new beginning. The first chapter was something I haven’t seen for awhile in a book starting you towards the end of the story and then working you through what brought our characters there and I enjoyed that. Probably the aspects I didn’t enjoy were some of the sidetracked info dumps from our main character and some side characters we didn’t really need. Sadly I didn’t love the ending either as I felt like they could have taken it further and maybe had the husband been involved with some of the big bads earlier on or have some of the side conflicts tie in more with our prison documentary subjects. Some things in the story just could have had more of a pay off to me but I’ll definitely read from this author again.

What a crazy story! I was absolutely not expecting the journey this book took me on, though that was probably helped by not reading the blurb. Even after the opening where Erin is digging a grave, I still managed to not quite believe what was happening as everything went a little crazy. But I'm surprised by how much I enjoyed it nonetheless.
I would say that the twist didn't come as an enormous surprise, but the circumstances surrounding it were really well thought out and I was completely hooked from about halfway through the book. Great writing and a really punchy, if hard to believe, story that was a lot of dramatic fun.

Overall, I liked the idea behind the book, and typically I love this genre. I liked the writing style of Catherine Steadman, and will definitely read another book written by her.
This book starts out amazing. I’d say probably around 50-65% in, it really held my interest. There were things that started to happen that just seemed a bit contrived. A little out there. And then there was the ending. Not completely disappointing, but still I was left wondering why. It felt like the ending could have been great, but instead, it just felt a little rushed. Not my favorite book, but certainly not my least favorite one either. Would make a solid summer reading choice.
