I wonder what a group of upper elementary students could do with this as a text for a performance.
A child who is marching to their own drummer is getting ready for the school talent show. Lots of beats and movement opportunites.

A young girl auditions for the school talent show, because she has got a "Rock n' Roll Soul!"

This girl has a Rock ’n’ roll soul. Music is what she is about and so she gets to shine during the talent show.
The artwork had the energy of music. The story brought out different styles and the artwork matched it. It’s a short story with energy and a beat. The story has soul.
The nephew thought the book was exciting to read. He started to bop along with the book. He was on his knees and bouncing along with the story. It didn’t help him get ready for bed. He gave this 4 stars.

I like the idea of this more than the reality. I tried reading the text silently, but it didn't work. I tried reading it out loud, but kept fumbling with finding a rhythm.
It's supposed to be on the wild side, and Matthew Cordell's illustrations really capture this.

I read this to the class of students I was teaching. Their reaction was muted. They didn’t have the background knowledge to access the text. I liked the message and the technique the author used to tell her story, but sadly, this wasn’t that accessible.

I didn't dislike this book - I loved it's message, and the illustrations worked well to that end. My issue was that the rhythm of the book was off - the words just don't flow. Flow and rhythm are important to me in storybooks, but particularly in one about music.
