could have been 5 stars but i’d need jane to rewrite the last three chapters but alas she is dead and there will be no rewrites. so SPOILERS 4 stars for cousins getting married in the end. ik it was normal then but no! fanny had other options! and edmund sucks and was the biggest loser ever like he’s literally a wet blanket dude cannot have fun to save his life

The characters are nicely defined, although the ending is slightly abrupt

It’s wonderful and rare expecting to dislike a book and ending up loving it instead.

Mansfield Park may be the most complex and difficult of Austen’s novels, but It’s well worth the effort. The Crawfords are the best antagonists of any of Austen’s works, imo, because they are so horrible, yet likable, and so damaged, while still feeling like they could be saved. Fanny—gentle, helpful, moral, and delicate, but with a will of iron—was far stronger than I would have been, seeing the Crawfords for who they were, rather than who they should have been, and holding herself separate from both. I loved the contrast between Edmund and Fanny in this respect. Edmund allowed himself to love a figment of his imagination. Fanny was grounded in reality.

May Netflix never get their hands on this one.

“Life seems but a quick succession of busy nothings."
&
“Her own thoughts and reflections were habitually her best companions.” - Jane Austen, Mansfield Park

And just like that, I've finished all of Jane Austen's complete novels and honestly then end was a little underwhelming. If you know me, you know that Jane Austen (along with Sally Rooney) is my absolute favourite author. However, Mansfield Park won't be reaching even my top 50 any time soon. It was an enjoyable story; one of Austen's comedic works. As always, the comedy hits just right, and the misadventures of every character are very entertaining. However, I found the main character pretty boring (very one-dimensional 'good girl') and the love interest almost just as boring. Their age gap and the fact they are closely related also did not endear me to their inevitable relationship. I didn't really feel I was routing for anyone. The parental figures and older relatives were actually my favourite parts, I would've much preferred a story centring their dynamics. I would rate this book probably just behind or on the same level as Northanger Abbey, it comes nowhere close to Emma or Pride and Prejudice. This is a short review as I honestly don't have much to say besides that it was a book that I read and sometimes enjoyed. See you soon, maybe - C x

Fanny Price, cousin to the Bertrams, is invited to come to Mansfield Park. The distinctions between her home and the Bertram’s home are stark. As Fanny grows into a woman we see her relationships mature. Lots happens as we eavesdrop on the conversations between family, friends, and partners.

Jane Austen writes beautifully - plot and characters. I love her storytelling and dialogue. I find her writing funny and interesting. She is masterful and deserves her long held status as a brilliant writer of classic books. Glad to have finally read this one.

“With so much true merit and true love, and no want of fortune and friends, the happiness of the married cousins must appear as secure as earthly happiness can be.”
