Bullet Review REREAD UPDATE:

Maybe I'm more generous in 2019 (maybe reading the prequels made me realize how much better this is), but eff it, this was decent. It was epic and exciting, a great big scope with a great big messy political message. Yeah, it needs more women, but eff it, I enjoyed the hell out of this second time around.

Bullet Review:

Mehhhhhhhh. Hasn't this comic already been done in The Incredibles?

And WHY are we interested in another little white boy's story? Why isn't it his mom's story? Or how about a little girl?

Mark Millar is an author that doesn't have anything to say about anything. Sometimes he implies things, like how he implies capitalism is not a perfect system but it beats the alternative of "socialism", but he has zero arguments as a result of having zero opinions, so he implies what it's all about, and then quickly distracts you with some fun superhero battles which is what he's good at.

The story is rushed, which is evident in the brother's transformation from someone who wanted Obama to lower the taxes to literally kill his brother's wife because he wants to ban all religions in the span of half an issue. From that point forward the villains are caricatures at best.

I'm not entirely sure why I even bother with anything Mark Millar does. I saw it on the library, it was fast read. But he's a gross residue of Morrison's talents, like a sperm that somehow catched life of its own and is now grabbing great ideas from thin air and transforming them into the most dull comics you will come across.

But I'm morbidly curious about the sequel. He's not unreadable. He has a nice eye for dialogue. He does stuff well. But he always gives up hallway through and retreats to familiar territory. He never accomplishes anything with his stories. Too bad.

Well written with an interesting story I didn't expect. Tried to watch the Netflix show when it came out, and I can confirm that I am now depressed that the show is so bad because the comic is actually pretty good.

Seems like a great, big world here, told with very spare details, which is a nice way to add mystique and let the reader use their imagination for the periphery. Things happen almost too quickly. Blink and you'll miss it, even when you're consuming at your own pace. That's not necessarily a problem, but I wish there were simply more stories to this series. I understand in publication history, there's 'Jupiter's Legacy' volume 1, then 'Jupiter's Circle' volumes 1 & 2 (first of which is Okay; I'll hold off judgment 'til after the second), and finally 'Jupiter's Legacy' volume 2. Maybe it's going to be a perfect setup to expand in the television series. Either way, I'm enjoying them. Just not emotionally invested.

I’m kind of done with the ultraviolence in comics, it’s very 90s and what was shocking and boundary pushing then is just distasteful now. The costumes for the women are also stuck in the 90s, they’re pretty gross, for no reason. The last two issues of these five were more interesting, however, so I might see where this goes even thought knowing that Mark Millar is pro-Brexit leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I have no idea why they’ve renumbered these in their new ‘Netflix’ editions.
