McConnell and Baker tell their story with a detailed history of their fight to change the social stigma around gay relationships in the 1970's, the frustrating, endless legal battles, and the many ways they both served publicly as activists for years. Now that gay marriage has become accepted and commonplace in many states, it is important to document the difficult path it took and the level of discrimination that was so common just 40 years ago.

But this book is also a love story, with tender moments, love letters, and cute photos of this couple woven in amidst the historical documents. The tone is hopeful and loving, and leaves the reader with a sweet sense of "happily ever after".

I received this book for free from a Goodreads Giveaway.

I really enjoyed reading Michael McConnell's memoir; it's a short book that I finished in two sittings. I found it to be a touching account of the couple's struggle for acceptance, set mostly in the late '60s and early 70s. I appreciated Michael's sense of humor and optimism, and felt that the work was very conversational. Michael was very open in the work, and I was interested in the intimate details of his life that he was willing to share. I especially enjoyed the photos and newspaper clippings.

I may be in the minority here, but I would have enjoyed more specifics about their legal struggle. I also would have liked to have had heard Jack's voice in the memoir; perhaps he would have been able to provide the detail I craved. Additionally, I think the work would have benefited from some talk of the work other's were doing in the LGBT community at that point in history. For example, how did Michael and Jack feel about the Stonewall riots?

All in all, I found this to be an enjoyable an informative read. Thanks for sharing your story!
