A bit of a drag. Not as good as the rest of the series.

final conflict felt like a film (derogatory) and that seriously knocked it down for me. i enjoyed the plot but that final fight and the dialogue in it in particular felt like suchhhh a cliche and i couldnโ€™t take it seriously. other than that i did like majority of the rest but i canโ€™t rate it higher on account of those other things sorry.

โ€œYou rarely regret the things you do, but always the things you don't.โ€

๐Ÿ’ญI am quite late to read this fourth book in the original Legend trilogy. This book was in my TBR for so long and finally, I completed the series and now I don't understand why I waited this long to read this book when I loved reading the trilogy earlier. After reading Rebel I realized this was the book I did not know I needed!!
Let me take a moment to sigh in contentment at this fitting end to the series. This book answered all the questions and tied up all the loose ends in a fantastic yet thrilling way. It's been a few years since I read the Legend trilogy but this brought it all back.

Rebel is told from a dual perspective -- The Wing brothers, Day and Eden. We get to see their brotherly relationship and Eden gets more spotlight. He's laidback, timid but intelligent. He has an aptitude for technology and Marie Lu made sure she highlights his strength. Plot-wise, it's not as action-packed as the previous three books. It's more political and character-driven. June and Day played the role but they appear as secondary characters. I wanted more June! We didnโ€™t get her perspective in this one.
Plus, Hann behaved like he was one of those villains from a Disney movie, just needed the evil laugh...
Thereโ€™s so much going on from the start of this story. One of my favorite aspects is the fact that Ross City, while not remotely like the old Republic, has its host of problems plaguing its world. While the city is a technopolis like no other, the citizens live based on a points system. That point system dictates where and what they can do. Eden looks at these flaws both as a victim of the system and as a tech genius.

Day will always be my favorite, yet Eden proved himself to be an interesting person here with his own personality, ideas, and set of skills. I loved the continuation of Day's and June's relationship, and Day's relationship with Eden. But I didn't love the Eden romance.
It was an amazing, nostalgic finale - The flashbacks and memories! All the little hints at special moments from the previous books!
The characters never lost their sparks and still kickass. I still haven't gotten over the last chapter. It just feels SO. FRICKIN'. FANTASTIC.

โ€œBecause sometimes, broken pieces find a way to make a new whole.โ€

โ€œWe canโ€™t save the world...โ€
โ€œBut still we try anyway... One day at a time.โ€

โ€œShe was the flint lighting sparks in my darkness, illuminating a history that I can just barely see.โ€

โ€œI've looked over my shoulder for a decade,' I whisper, 'wondering what it was that was missing in my life. Turns out, all this time, it was you.โ€

โ€œIt is not weakness to open your heart. It does not make you less of a man to ask for help. To turn to someone when youโ€™re vulnerable. To need a shoulder to cry on. You donโ€™t have to bear the weight of anything by yourself. Do you understand me? I know what itโ€™s like to be forced to go it alone. I never want you to feel that way.โ€

โ€œChange never happens unless you force it.โ€

โ€œBecause, sometimes, being patriotic means calling out the problems rotting away your country. I'm not saying we don't want to work with you. But we represent millions of voices you're not hearing right now. If you want to preserve the spirit of what made Antarctica a world leader, to begin with, you should take a look at your blind spots.โ€

โ€œThe world shifts, tilts, sometimes collapses. But sometimes, it bends toward you, and everything feels right.โ€

โ€œthe small steps you take that are invisible to everyone else in the world. The steps that, nevertheless, matter the most.โ€

โ€œThat I love you,โ€ I whisper. โ€œThat Iโ€™ve been in love with you for years, even when we were separated. Especially then. Iโ€™ve lived with you in my life, and Iโ€™ve lived without you. No matter what kind of fear I feel in the possibility of us being together, the fear of being away from you is something I donโ€™t think I can bear.โ€ I look down, shy to meet her gaze now. โ€œI have nightmares of losing you again. All the time.โ€

โ€œEven if we don't know where we'll go in the future, perhaps our lives were always meant to collide again and again. Perhaps we are forever meant to be each other's catalysts.โ€

โ€œIf you have to sell your soul in your quest to make things better,โ€ I say through gritted teeth, โ€œthen youโ€™ll never succeed.โ€

โ€œSome pasts canโ€™t be left behind. They must be fought.โ€

โ€œ...sometimes, broken pieces find a way to make a new whole.โ€

โ€œWe may always struggle with our pasts, but we can rest assured that weโ€™ll always have someone else who can pull us forward.โ€

โ€œThere is nothing to figure out, there is no how or why. Sometimes things just happen.โ€

4.5; BEST ENDING EVER. This was the perfect ending to an amazing series.

I was a little skeptical about this, because for the most part, it moved too slow for my taste.

BUT THE ENDING. OH MY GOD. Iโ€™M STILL PROCESSING IT. I love Day and June so much, I canโ€™t put it into words.

I found the plot with Dominic Hann to be pretty predictable, though (which was why I decided to deduct half a point).

I havenโ€™t really been able to get attached to Eden, but his relationship with Pressa was adorable.

Few authors do time jumps right, most disappoint. But Marie Lu excelled. Iโ€™ve never been a fan of authors ending a series with the โ€œWeโ€™re 40 and married with a bazillion children!โ€ trope. Iโ€™m sure I made that clear with my review for Mockingjay. So when I tell you about the sweat trickling down my back while reading Rebel since I was so sure Marie Lu was going to do thatโ€ฆ Well, Iโ€™m sorry Ms. Lu for underestimating you. Iโ€™m SO glad we got an engagement instead. It was filled with more emotion and beauty than any other engagement Iโ€™ve read about (none, but iโ€™m still assuming this is the best of the best.) I was jumping around for a solid five minutes squealing โ€œOh my God, theyโ€™re getting married! Day and June are getting married!โ€.
