I was pleasantly surprised by this edgy updated fairy tale! I think I want to go find more of Nic Stone's stories now.

What did I just read?!?! A twisted and dark take on the classic tale of Hansel and Gretel. I can’t decide if I liked it or not. It was just a lot to process. Gray was a wonderfully protective character and I honestly think his quick wit and actions saved the story for me.

There’s some

A very disturbing retelling of Hansel and Gretel.

I finished listening to it all I could say is "whoa, that was messed up".

This is free with Amazon Prime. It was quick and a well narrated.

Again, this was my first time reading this author. This was the second book in this novella series that I read and it was my first Nic Stone book. I have heard amazing things about her writing so I wanted to give this a try.

I thought this was a very imaginative and mature take on Hansel and Gretel. I really liked the way Nic Stone elevated the original story and worked modern references and issues into this classic tale.

I didn't like how dark the themes got. I also really didn't like the way the ending basically left you with a "well, this is as good as it's gonna get" kind of feeling.

This was not my favorite from this series and it really doesn't make me want to read any more Nic Stone books. Please note, I won't rule them out, but this book didn't turn me into a fan.

Hazel and Gray has a unique plot that is definitely not like the original kid version Hansel and Gretel, but you can see the similarities. There were a number of analogies, wasn't a fan of them, too abstract. The magical element was nice, and Hazel dropping legos instead of bread crumbs was cute. I enjoyed the young love story and magic. Book executed very well. Trigger warnings: sex traffic should be labeled for this book

Like the Brothers Grimm version, readers will experience themes related to family, obedience, child captivity, and death.

In this modern retelling, Hansel and Gretel are rewritten as the teenaged couple, Hazel and Gray. While the dark themes also shift from family abandonment and cannibalism to reflect those of modern American society such as sex-trafficking and child abuse.

The nearness or familiarity of the modern themes could be jarring to readers unfamiliar with the dark themes from many Brothers Grimm tales. The juxtaposition of teenage consensual sex with the violence of sex-trafficking might also hit too close to home.
