It’s apparent that this type of genre isn’t for me, hence the lower rating. I appreciate the book for what it’s done, and actually loved the overall story and message (finding inner strength and bravery; enjoying adventure) but it was tough for me to grasp onto the language and quite honestly, the WHY of what they were doing. I kept going because of its infamy, and because it was important to my husband. Maybe I’ll try the LOTR books and hope for the best.

I've read this after having seen all three movies so all the changes stood out to me even more. It only made me love Middle-Earth even more though (let's travel there sometime). It was a fun read and I really enjoyed Tolkien and his characters, especially Bilbo. Now The Lord of the Rings is next for me and I'm so so excited to get started on it. This was a great prequel/introduction to Tolkiens universe.

Unfortunately this was not as epic as I had expected. I think I loved the idea / aesthetic of a this high fantasy novel but it didn't really keep me entertained. I think the writing made it very hard for me to get fully invested (at some points even to understand). It was also a slower paced novel, which sometimes I don't mind, but it being slow partnered with a slightly difficult writing style to read at normal speed made this a tedious read. Don't get me wrong, I am glad I read it (there were some parts that I absolutely loved), but it just didn't live up to the hype for me. I still recommend everyone try to read this at least once in their life.
