Surprisingly endearing, hopeful coming of age story set in Nigeria. Oto's story isn't an easy one to read, but it's so well balanced by the hope and the humour that it never felt too hard, or like I needed to put it down for a break.

This book is probably the best book I've ever read! It is a coming-of-age story of a Nigerian boy who wishes to identify as a female. He has a twin sister, who is aware of this. His mother rejects him because he is different. It is a sad story, but also a heartwarming story. Definitely a must read!

This book follows an intersex girl forced to present as a male by her mom  who sees her as being the devil.  Lori (chosen name) longs to go to America because in Nigeria, their science isn't advanced enough to help Lori.

Many see Lori as a monster such as her mom, father, and bullys, but she manages to find people who believe in the science of intersex people as something that isn't unnatural. She has her twin sister, her teacher, and her best friend, and others who try to help her.

I think this book is a good example of why science is so important as well as the abuse many undertake in the Lgbtq community.

I really like the first act (although it felt there was no purpose to having dual timelines) but the second act felt rushed to me somehow? While I'm glad things worked out for Lori, it felt like things worked too perfectly in the end. I don't really like how things worked out for Derin
Him leaving when things got bad and rumors spread around school as well as him liking Lori back (felt too perfect and out of nowehere)
I also think that while going to America may help Lori in exploring herself as being intersex, the book made it seem like America would solve all of her problems when that's really an idealistic view. I also feel like the sui*cide attempt was breezed over too quickly (this is part of what I think about the second half being rushed). I wished the bully ark hadn't taken up so much of the book and had rather been more sub.

While I feel like this book could have been developed better (plot, characters, structure), I still appreciated a lot it gave forth.

I loved the art teacher definitely my favorite character. He always supported Lori and was there when things got as bad as they did.

I also liked the sprinkles of Nigerian culture such as Yeyemi.

"Why do our parents bother to have us if they bother to hurt us so"

"Show her in plain scientific fact that I wasn’t some devil spawn, just her child."

A beautifully and harrowing (rightfully so) read in the best, most needed, of ways.
