Alright... shame time. I only read this book because I watched the film adaptation from 2013, In Secret, starring Elizabeth Olsen and Oscar Isaac (because, ya know, the internet’s new boyfriend, right, and I’m just complete trash). I wanted to see how the book measured up to the movie. Admittedly I thought the movie was garbage even though I LOVED it. So the book had to be better right?

I don't know what bothered me more about this book- depressing scenery or forced character definitions by the author.
if I never again read about "female nerves" or "sanguine personalities" it will be too soon...

More sensationalist than naturalist, this reads like a mashup of [b:Crime and Punishment|7144|Crime and Punishment|Fyodor Dostoevsky|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1382846449l/7144._SY75_.jpg|3393917] and [b:The Tell-Tale Heart|24874303|The Tell-Tale Heart|Edgar Allan Poe|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1423755062l/24874303._SX50_.jpg|19034527]. Obviously suffused as always with Zola's optimism and sunny disposition - he must have been the life and soul of any party.
