Like many other people, the last time I read All Quiet I was in high school. Preoccupied with the worries of the average adolescent, it didn't make much of an impact on me--or many of my classmates in English lit, for that matter. Reading it now, think Remarque's masterpiece is totally wasted on teenagers. You need an combination of age and experience to fully empathize with the overwhelming sorrow--and small moments of joy--within its pages.

I keep picking up books that are so sad and heartbreaking. I need to choose something next that will be a bit happier. This story is written so beautifully, poetically, and I love it. I remember my sophomore year in high school we watched the movie, but now I've read the book. The perspective of the German soldiers is definitely different from what I'm used to, I usually read books from the British or U.S. perspective.
I highly recommend this book, but be prepared to be sad and possibly even cry a little. The emotions are so potent and you really feel for the characters. The characters are interesting, as is the story line. I honestly thought I would get bored, yet I didn't. This classic is going in my favorites list.

I have actually read this book three times, all for school assignments - 7th grade, 10th grade and sophomore year in college. I loved it more and more with each read, and the symbolism and character development in this novel of historical fiction is incredible.

3.5 stars. It’s a good read in many ways and I’m happy to finally have read this novel. I like the constant shifts in focus (from war zone to the many antics of Paul and his friends) and the often somewhat impassive descriptions of life at that time. Having said that, I should have given the book more time in order to fully digest the content.

A classic for a reason. Unforgettable. Everyone should read this at least once. Probably we should all read it before we turn 20, and then we should read it again after we've survived our 20s. Certainly anyone considering going to war, starting a war, or voting for a war should be required to read this book first.

A classic for a reason. It is so well written and captures the horrors of World War 1. Heartbreaking.

About as high of a rating as I could give a war book, so, definitely worth the read.
