Group therapy directed at the disenfranchised lives of fairytale/reality TV women and the fallout consequences of obtaining happily ever after.

I really enjoyed this book, but it took me a minute to get into it. It’s primarily a collection of stories interrupted by the members of the support group talking to each other. I found the women’s thoughts on each other’s traumas really interesting to read, but the stories were somewhat hit or miss—each relatively different in vibe and genre. Other than that, really fun read! Really awesome feminist perspective on how women get twisted by tragedies, and even worse, but the media. Good if you’re into the kind of “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark” x Final Girl vibes.

Four modern day incarnations of fairytale figures and a reality tv star meet in a New York support group to discuss and hopefully recover from their trauma. Sounds like the set up for a joke but it’s actually the premise of How To Be Eaten. The book has lots of smart things to say about the way women are treated, used and judged by society, and in about the invidious nature of social media and so called reality tv. Most of all it called into question the complicity of the public, the audience who are fascinated by certain news stories and reality shows, who love a happy ending but never wonder what lies beyond it, and who join in the online public discourse and never think about its impact on those being discussed. I wanted to love this but sadly it just didn’t really click for me. Something was off with the meshing of the fairy tale  characters and the contemporary realistic setting.

This was strange and compelling as hell. The writing is excellent and I was invested in every character’s story

This felt like Final Girl Support Group meets The Lunar Chronicles with a little bit of the Wayward Children series, all stories I’ve enjoyed.

The ending reveal left me a little underwhelmed, but overall this was powerful and intriguing

The premise already had me hooked and this book did not disappoint.
While some of the fairy tails are easier to discern and point out right away than others, it was fun to try and figure out what less obvious ones were.

The story incorporated and re-interpreted the fairy tales well into the story to spin a tale that is up to date and touches upon current topics while still keeping the element of magic just a tiny bit and leaves you second guessing some things.

There were also some turns I absolutely did not see coming.
You can't put this book down - you just have to read it!

The ending was a little off for me, but the small pieces of lives in recovery really make it worthwhile
Seriously, what was the ending trying to say? The women are taking power back by knowing that despite what the media has to say, they know the truth and that's enough? Or, is it all meant to be a warning a la-1984, putting us on the lookout for instances in the real world? I don't know, it's kind of unclear.
