I felt confused through a lot of this book but I think the fault lies with me and not the story. I think part of it might have to do with part of the story getting lost in translation (it wasn't written in English). I felt that there was some deeper knowledge and meaning lurking behind the words that I just was not smart enough to understand. Overall, an interesting story and some beautiful lines. I'm glad I read it.

How does one describe this book?
A small town in Germany. Fürstenfelde is home to a variety of people, old and young, new and old, fitting in and standing out. The plot meanders through the streets, sometimes going back to the 17th century to explore the history, sometimes following a character's life, other times focusing on a vixen that lives nearby.
It's a strange and beautiful tale. There is no plot, we are simply observing this town as it prepares for the feast.
I loved the combination of German idyll and mythical stories, the strangeness in which Stanisic describes the happenings and how it all feels ephemeral in the end.

Is this the definitive book on life in the former gdr after 1990? It might be. Time is weird in this village, it stands still and pulls backwards and has left the village behind. The story is so trippy and so real and so out there and so down to earth. The people are so weird and yet they make so much sense, and everyone is bored and proud and wistful and indifferent and I want to give this book to everyone I know. Fantastic.
