Had I known this book is more sexual body horror orgy tale and less sensual erotic relationship between women I would not have read it. It made me feel disgusted to be a wlw. If you read it as a horror story it's brilliant, also a unique display of the grossest perversions imaginable. Musset wrote it in 3 days as a bet, and it shows. The language isn't poetic but boring, repetitive and difficult to follow,  and the book relies solely on shock factor and cult following.

Well-written, erotic, and an astonishingly sympathetic view of lesbian sex. It is difficult to believe this book was written in 1833. To be sure, it keeps close to the more familiar themes of 18th and 19th c. pornography- phallocentrism, sadomasochism, voyeurism, incest. However the author/narrator (writer Alfed de Musset, hidden behind a pseudonym) recognizes the depths and legitimacy of lesbian sex, with its sensuality, passion, and satisfaction.
