Batman Rebirth #2 : Mon nom est suicide by Mitch Gerads, Tom King, Mikel Janín

This series is gaining momentum very quickly. Vol. 2 feels like a more contained storyline as Batman gathers together a secondary suicide squad to face off against Bane and his private army. There are a couple odd artistic moments, but the vast majority of the art is excellent. Furthermore, the psychology of Bane and Batman as they play out on the page add increased complexity to an already interesting story.

But the real strength of this volume is the relationship between Batman and Catwoman which sits at its core. King paints a deep picture of each character individually, and does impressive work in showing how they relate to each other. It provides a strong emotive center in a Batman volume that is otherwise dark, gripping, and marked by King's distinct style of blending character depth with exciting stories.

Better than volume 1, but King still hasn't found the right voice for Batman. Bat. Cat. Bat Cat.

...This was pretty damn fucking shit, if I'm allowed to be honest for a second here. Once again I feel gaslit by all of you into thinking I'm missing out here but King's writing is most definitely not it at all. The art is there and uh... be thankful we made it to the end.

But I've heard volume 5 is really good so... I may as well continue until I see for myself. So far tho, fairly unimpressed...

An edited review of this book will come sooner or later, this last one was pretty bad.

I didn’t care much for the Bane arc that takes up a majority of this volume, but I did quite like the  Rooftops story in the back third

SpoilerJust reread this for the first time since it came out. And man Tom Kings run has a lot of highs and lows for me. The I Am Suicide arc has a lot of potential. The team, the mission, the Catwoman conflict all great. But Batman’s written horribly in it. And does he get his back broken then… unbreak it?? Very unclear and so unrealistic even for comics.

The next arc in this collection is Rooftops and it is just amazing. One of the definitive Bat/Cat story’s. It showcases what makes their relationship so special with beautiful dialogue and art. I never caught it the first time but I realized that Batman says their meeting in costume was their first meeting. And Selina says it was the one out of costume on the street. I thought the argument was a joke back when I first read it, but clearly it’s a joke with a lot of thematic weight to it. I think this arc is what really made me think that Bruce and Selina belong together.

Also I need to see more of Punch and Jewlee!
