I couldn't get past the first chapter. Maybe if you're from Seattle it's impossible to ignore the clunky, forced, tired stereotypes of the admittedly lame, white Seattle population. Or maybe being from here makes the near incessant geography name dropping fucking intolerable. Honestly I was surprised to find out the author lives here because it felt like she had spent her research time on google maps exclusively. The little bit that I read caused me to roll my eyes in public one too many times. Just so cynical and dismissive without a promise of character development. And the plot was plodding and condescending (but not witty).

Just seemed like poking fun at easy targets. It's a bit like living in LA and writing a book full of uninspired jokes about yoga and juice cleanses; low hanging fruit.

This book tried really hard to be funny; I didn't find it so. I despised every character.

Wow. This book was simultaneously fun, sad, biting, and hilarious. It's written as a collection of anecdotes from different characters, copies of documents and letters, and other forms of information. Bernadette Fox, her husband Elgin, and her daughter live in a ritzy part of Seattle where Bernadette doesn't really fit in. The moms' group at her daughter Bee's school are clique-ish and hateful, and Bernadette steers clear until a series of unfortunate events forces her to interact with her fakey neighbor and her groupies. Ultimately, the book wraps up with an ill-fated trip or two to Antarctica and has Bernadette and her family making some important changes in their lives to come closer together.
