Decent story, poorly written

Grammar, difficult to follow character's conversations and very little character development. Otherwise thought the story was well intentioned but muddled in its delivery.

After seeing this in my Suggested Reading list on Amazon, I borrowed it from the Kindle Lending Library. It's an entertaining book about women living in a small village in England during WWII.

I struggled with the introduction of so many characters but they eventually grow on you. This is a story about how women contributed to the war effort in England during The Second World War.

Historical inaccuracies aside, a moderately enjoyable read.

I actually really enjoyed the flash back portion of the book (which is about 80%) but the "current day" part was done poorly for several reasons. Overall a good book especially for someone on a WW2 kick like I am right now.

I wanted to really like this a lot, but I couldn't. Had a very hard time remembering the characters and their back stories. Just didn't feel connected: never vested.

Good story about wartime Britain, but the beginning and ending were awkward and didn't fit with the rest of the book.

I really enjoyed this book. There seems to be a great many books being written lately about this era and I have read many of them. This one stood out for me because it dealt with several young women from very diverse backgrounds who would not have come together were it not for the circumstances. I do feel there were parts of the book where to story became a little muddled, and I felt the end was tied up a little too quickly, but all in all I really enjoyed the journey of the five women.

I enjoyed this book immensely, but I'm a fan of World War II novels. Is it right to say "a fan" of that genre? There's something about the strength of character of the people who lived then, the desire to sacrifice for their country, and the willingness to help each other out. Anyway, I know I'm romanticizing the era but that's part of the appeal of that decade as well: women were soft and feminine but they were strong and tough.

The novel starts with five women who have nothing in common who come to rely on each other for their survival. I think the way they were able to create a sense of community, not just for themselves but for those who lived in the town with them, was admirable. And the loyalty between the ladies, even when they weren't sure about the other's motives, was a nice contrast to the idea that we generally have of women always in competition with each other.

My one complaint is that there were just too many characters. Each was interesting in her or his own way, but there were points where I had to go back and try to remember who the person was and how she or he was connected to the other characters.

I'd recommend this book for book groups as there are a lot of areas for discussion: women and war, sacrifice, justice, revenge, family, etc.

Lovely WWII historical fiction..... What more could I want? A story about 5 women, how they get thrown together during the war and what happens when they meet again 50 years later. A very nice book, I recommend it.
