While I know getting a period isn't in any way proof that God exists, I totally relate with this teenage Margaret. I also anticipated my period. As a kid I always wanted to grow up. Funny thing is as a grown up, I don't want to grow up anymore.

I understand being emotional and having conflicting feelings toward God. I get how Margaret feels the need to explore that because everyone seems to be something and she wants to see what religion is all about.

The bottom line is, I feel that Judy Blume did capture a piece of my teenage self in Margaret.

Holy crap was this an age ago! In the 70s at Catholic school this was an underground book - very hard to get ahold of!

I remember reading this when I was younger. Actually it was one of the first books I borrowed from the school library and as a new immigrant I was astonished I had access to so many books! So already starting off strong with nostalgia with this work.
Re reading this as now a grown woman and also a mom, it made me realize how much power this little book has for the little girls of this age. I’m excited to go see the movie adaptation of this and will most likely 100% cry (mother-daughter topics now hold that power against me).

On a final note, rereading this made me appreciate rereading old books but at different stages of your life. ♥️

Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret
5 Stars

When 12 year-old Margaret Simon moves from New York to the suburbs of New Jersey, she goes to a new school and makes new friends. She also has to deal with the physical and emotional changes inherent in adolescence as she attempts to forge a new personal and religious identity.

Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret is a classic that appeals to readers just as much today as it did in the 1970s when it was first published.

Re-reading it with my students in the Women Writers course was an eye opening experience as they reminisced about their own coming of age, and one or two who are parents themselves spoke about their discussions with their own children.

Recommended for any pre-teen who is going through puberty as well as any adult who enjoys a smashing good read.
