This might not have been perfect, but damn, the feels!
I particularly enjoyed the family letters and getting a better idea of timelines, and a few of the stories left me wanting more. My favorite part was finding out that

I didn't realize that I wanted a book like this until I read it. The first five pages were a total shocker, and it makes me want another story about the Lioness! So Tammy, if you happen to read my review, can we plllllleeeeeeaaassseeeeeeeee have another book about the Lioness?
There were some details in the book that were fun to find as I read through it. I also like the fact that they were declassified spy papers from George! He was one of my favorites when I read books set in Tortall and I'm glad to get something from his perspective.
I am forever hopeful that we will get more from the world of Tortall, because it was my childhood.

I have mixed feelings on this book... On one hand, I am a huge fan and adored the "official" Tortallan timeline and the tidbits on what was going on behind the scenes of my favorite books. I loved reading the names of my favorite characters and finding out little things that didn't happen in the books. It was cool to also see the inner workings of Tamora Pierce's mind when she was writing and how her process works (ie, knowing some of these interactions that happen behind-the-scenes to drive the main storyline). On the other, it felt choppy and lazy and downright unnecessary at times. There were facts glaringly missing in the timeline (for example, we see Sarai and Dove's mother die in the riding accident in 455 and then we see Petranne born in 458 but somehow the marriage of Mequen and Winnamine was skipped). The letters, though fun, also seem pointless. They say so little but we are just excited to read them at all. I am glad for the look back into the lives of my favorite Tortallan heroes but this effort fell kind of flat at times. Overall, worth the read but keep expectations low if you are looking for something more substantive.

Initial Thoughts: There's so much information packed into this book that I definitely foresee myself going back to it over and over again just to look something up. Much of the writing differs in every perspective, and while a few passages could have potentially gotten dry, I read everything from page one to the very end. Love it!

Ho hum. I would have preferred a real new book. This book looks very pretty in kind of a fake old book way with very nice fonts. And some of the content is pleasant such as the bits from the cook's journal. But in general it doesn't add a whole lot. It's written well and has some nice artwork. And is a fairly good reminder of the Tortall related series. But generally it is just unnecessary.

Fun filler information for the Tortall books, but not a substantial read itself.

Fun! If you’re a fan of the Tortall world, you’ll like all the extra information this book has. Got a little emosh about Owen getting married in the timeline.
