This was shockingly good but also shockingly long!

I got on the waitlist for this book based on the plot and some of the hype, and when I got it, I was thrilled, but then I realized it was over 1,000 ebook pages! While the first 30% are hard to get into, which made me struggle because that's still 300 e-book pages, once I got into the meat of the story, I flew through the remaining 700 e-book pages in two days!

Plot-wise, this book is fascinating. It introduces us to the world's concepts and ideas slowly, only as we need to know them, while still world-building to a degree that is magical! Our main character, Vis, was so compelling that it was impossible not to root for him, and every side character felt important. The things we purposely didn't know throughout the book worked to its advantage, with me tearing through the middle and end of the book desperate for answers, just like Vis.

The ending was so fantastic with all of the build-up paying off spectacularly! I can't wait for it's sequel because I'm desperate to know what happened!!!

I don't usually do reviews, because I tend to just rant... but ranting is good...

THIS. BOOK. WAS. AMAZING. I CAN NOT DESCRIBE HOW MUCH I LOVED THIS BOOK. IT WAS PERFECTION!!!!!!!!

It was the first high fantasy book I've read (besides Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit) so I didn't really know what I was expecting. Actually, no, I did know what I was expecting, I was expecting it to be boring, slow, confusing, or all three. What I was NOT expecting was to enjoy it as much as I did!

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone that likes fantasy books!

I'll write a review when I can think and write in complete sentences again. Instant favourite.

I'm hoppin on the hype train. Fantastically written. I think the comparisons to Red Rising is apt, but this is far better; better writing, better pacing, better characters, better plot, better "magic" and world. The length seemed intimidating at first but this did not feel like I was reading 700+ pages at all. The only criticism I might level was that Vis almost was too good, too lucky at everything; but none of it felt unearned.

I only wish book 2 was out already!
