I read this book to my niece during Christmas. She picked it out and enjoyed it. It was just within the threshold for her 3 yr old attention span. She liked it enough to request a followup Curious George story. Her highest compliment is to request a repeat of the exact same book so I suppose it was 4 stars for her. ;)

(spoilers ahead)
George escapes from the zoo and tries to become a productive member of society be getting a job. Along the way, he ends up discovering a beautiful artistic side but is persecuted for it. When the Man (with the Yellow Hat) reads in the paper that his now-famous monkey “friend” hurt his leg escaping an angry mob, and is hospitalized, he rushes to phone the hospital! Not to go visit him and cheer him up, but to ask the staff to alert him when the drama is over and George is discharged. The Man has big plans!

He takes George to Hollywood to make lots of money off George's biopic, in which George will star. He only wants to take care of George when it's not too much bother, and when it makes him money. My son now knows about how some people will claim to be friends while exploiting you for their own profit, while smiling the whole way through. It's a good lesson for all kids, especially those showing an artistic bent. Thumbs up!

Also, Curious George happily gets wasted in ether, warning that artists are perhaps at danger of substance abuse. Another good lesson!

An adventurous little book about exploiting a monkey for labor, then shaming and victim blaming him for it. It really isn't supposed to be that deep, but describing it that way feels more on point than the heavy-handed "curiosity broke the monkey's leg" lesson the book attempts to teach. I can't believe I ever forgot the candy-coated darkness of the original books, but at least this one taught me not to jump off high places for fear of breaking bones!

When a curious monkey has too much time on his hands, he's bound to find some mischief. George wonders what life might be like outside and leaves the confines of his home. After finding himself in the middle of a restaurant kitchen, he is given the opportunity to take a job washing window.s While he is agile and able to climb with ease, the curiosity of what is going on inside each apartment is too much for George. He enters when no one is looking and begins taking things into his own hands. While he does not mean any harm, there's always a little too much curiosity in that monkey. Neo quite enjoyed this story, seeing George get into so much trouble. He loved the illustrations and the story kept his attention throughout. Bring on more Curious George!
