This was good! I think the romance was the best part, though I did enjoy the magic and that part of the plot. And there was less WHY WON'T PEOPLE COMMUNICATE in this one, haha, which worked out well. I think maybe a LITTLE more emphasis could have been put on the actual magic plot with the villain but since the romance was my favorite part anyway, I guess it worked out in the end, lol.

I didn’t enjoy this as much as the first book in the duology. There were some plot points and tropes that I do not like, and as a result I was frustrated by the experience. The world is still interesting, and the magic system creative. The characters are fun, although not very complicated. I do appreciate that each of them have issues and areas of growth that they experience. It’s still light, fast paced, and mostly entertaining. A good palette cleanser.

I read the previous book as an ebook and listened to this one as an audiobook. I enjoyed this entry more, and I wonder how much the audiobook narration contributed to that. Overall I think this is a pretty good YA historical fantasy duology. It doesn't rely heavily on the typical YA fantasy tropes or historical romance tropes, but you do get the good stuff that both genres have to offer.

I was CONCERNED!

I really was worried old Merton was gonna get away with her scheming. Mind you, while I don't agree with the execution, her motives were...understandable. And watching Bacchus and Elsie get their happily ever after... *swoon*
