This book was given to my by my father as a birthday gift. So thankful he gave it to me because it was so so good! Couldn’t put it down bc I wanted to find out what happened. I will say there is a trigger warning for people who want to read this book so if you have something triggering do some research on the book first. Overall I would recommend

Mikael Blomkvist is hired by Henrik Vanger for two tasks 1. Write an autobiography on the Vanger family. 2. Help Solve the possible murder of 16-year-old Harriet Vanger in 1966. Mikael has just been charged with Libel after a report against one of the biggest businessmen of Sweden done by him was labeled False and he is set to serve some time in jail.
He takes the case and with the help of Lisbeth Salander, Research Agent for Milton Security, they uncover the unbelievable story of the Vanger family past and present. We also experience the horrors that Lisbeth faces as a child of the system (Guardianship) and how mentors/guardians take advantage of those within their care.

A bit dry, and a bit slow to start with but I was slowly pulled into the complexities of the dual plots. Yes it’s dark and disturbing in places, but it’s a murder mystery so that’s ok with me. I ended up really enjoying it, and with a satisfying conclusion that can be rare to find in many trilogies especially in genre fiction. My only slight irritation was I couldn’t help feeling that the good guy, moral, charming, effortlessly sexually attractive investigative journalist was an idealised self image of the author himself.
That said I can heartily recommend it to anyone interested in relatively complex mysteries and aren’t put off by some descriptions of the very dark side of human nature.

This book needs so many content warnings. I had no idea it was going to be the book that it was. That being said, it kept me hooked all 644 pages and if you like a complicated mystery I definitely recommend this book.

For me, this book fluctuated from interesting to dull. Overall though, a decent read. Great characters all around, though I wish the book would have had more of a mystery feel to it

I read this for my Mocha Girls Read book club in May. The first half of the book dragged for me. I didn't care that much about Mikael's predicament and his lost magazine article. The opening was amazing introducing Harriet and hooked me on the mystery. I kept going because I needed to uncover who was behind the murders, much like Mikael's character. It had been a few years since I'd seen the films, so I had nearly forgotten until quite close to the end. My absolute favorite parts though were when the story focused on Lisbeth Salander.
I found it a bit annoying that nearly every woman Mikael meets wants to sleep with him. He really must be some kind of Casanova in bed in these books. At least in the Fincher film, we get Daniel Craig to make that part seem more realistic. Finally reading the book did make me appreciate the film adaptations. After the book, I promptly did a marathon of the Swedish versions with Noomi Rapace on Amazon. The movies are kinda long but I really love them. Rooney Mara and Claire Foy both played Lisbeth in unique ways that I felt were true to the book. I might just be partial to Noomi in all things.
If you're a fan of Scandanavian thrillers like The Killing, you will probably devour this series. That's if you haven't already!

Saw the movie before I read the book and was glad that I did. I think the book would have been hard to get into if I didn't know some of the people and know the story was worth putting in the time it took to get caught up in the characters.
I can see how people may have been disappointed in the movie if they read the book first as it does have to leave out so much of the background and core of the characters.

I'll say this: the book wound up far, far better than I thought it would. At the halfway point, I was convinced I knew what the ending was (and thought it was lame) and was just wishing it would get there already. However, while the actual ending to the story was far more intelligent than I expected, the book certainly took its time in getting there. I saw a comment somewhere that what this book needed was a really good editor, and I have to say I agree with it. There were entire subplots that I just didn't see the purpose of including, other than to fill space. It was a little frustrating to read through it all only to have it not really play a role in the story.
The last third of this book was great. The first two thirds? Eh. They were all right. I'm not sure I get all the hype around these, that's for sure. It's highly unlikely that I'll bother to read the other two, unless I get really desperate for reading material.
