after a series of very disappointed starts with novels, like recently, i generally turn to short stories to cleanse my palate. this collection came in the nick of time. it's wonderful! powerful, well-written stories of black women and girls, and those that love them, in the florida panhandle.

LOVED IT!
This is one of those books I wouldn't pick for myself if it weren't for a reading challenge but OMG I was amazed. The very first short story pulled me in and I devoured the rest with the same enthusiasm. I loved how the stories basically focused on womanhood and it's main events through life with a fresh, tight and perfectly paced writing style.
There is also something I want to note: I am Hungarian and the black population here in Hungary is very very small, so even though I never got stuck on color when meeting people, this book introduced me to...how to put it... to a vibe of life that is kind of different from my little bubble and I feel like I learned a lot. I am thankful for that.

great, immersive writing broken into many short stories but INTENSE. must read this one with the intent to digest, make worldly observations and understand the deeper meaning and purpose that’s buried underneath the obvious plots.

Interesting and three-dimensional characters.
