I've seen so much hype for this book since before it's release, but now that I've actually read it I feel like I was missing something. Perhaps it's because I never really found my stride with the audiobook narrator--I felt like Kit's voice was always just too over-the-top--but somehow, when reading this book, I constantly felt like nothing was happeningĀ but also so much was happening at all times. The main reason for our characters banding together felt like a subplot more than a driving force behind the novel, and it ultimately culminates in an anticlimactic scene (where the biggest related events happen off-the-page and are only described after the fact).
I also never really bought into the main romance of the novel, or even the characters. There's a wide array of side characters that I frankly can barely differentiate, and neither Kit nor Percy felt especially compelling. That might sound like a harsh critique, but I honestly don't know if it's just my tastes as a reader or indicative of the novel itself.
Nonetheless, there were some cute (if forgettable) scenes, and the premise of the book was fun. This was my first Cat Sebastian read and despite everything, I'm hopeful for any future books I read by her in the future.
