This book is really amazing, I love it. It made me cry, it made me laugh, the starting was really good, the character of Finch was amazing and very engaging. Sometimes writing was really really child-like, whatever written was very superficial and she didn't write down the emotions or situations clearly on the page it was written like a screenplay sometimes, some lines. the last line in the entire book was also a letdown because that was also kind of written in a screenwriting manner but there is a big difference between a screenplay and a novel but other than that it's a really really good book and it is really engaging. It talks about something very personal and I cried for the last 5 chapters and I am really happy for reading this book.

if dear evan hansen is the after, this is the before. it makes sense to me

Also idk how to rate this book?? idk if I liked it, if I liked the depiction of the whole mental illness stuff and I can't decide whether it was done well or not. romanticizing the whole thing through love poems feels wrong idk

I had high expectations for this one but it ended up disappointing me. The novel romanticize suicide and turns Finch’s terrible mental health into cute little love poems for Violet. I also despised how many times Finch ignored Violet’s initial lack of romantic interest in him and kept pushing himself on her. Finch’s awful parents and the fact that they did not suffer any hard consequences for the things they did deeply bothered me as well.

What I did like was how the “labeling culture” was depicted and Finch’s personal struggle with the labels that are given to him. This book could have been a solid been at least 4 starts if the author had depicted suicide and mental illnesses in teens better.

I couldn't put this book down - it was powerful and relatable writing about a very real and serious subject (mental health) that doesn't get nearly enough attention in our society. The two main characters, Violet Markey and Theodore Finch, had tremendous depth in their personalities. I loved both of their voices, which were at times charming, funny, serious and heartbreaking. It's not an easy read by any means, but in many ways a necessary one. (And, side note, I was so glad to see after I finished that GermMagazine.com really exists!)
