I really wanted to love this book but when it was over I just wanted to yell "UGHHH WHY" because I had spent so much time on it. It frustrated the hell out of me. First of all, it was about 100 pages too long. Atwood could have cut out that much detail and not sacrificed any story. Grace gives us every tiny detail of what daily life is like as a servant in the 1800s. I kept expecting there to be a reason at the end, like she was giving all these small details to confuse or distract the interviewer from the truth. Nope! Just detail for the sake of it.

It finally started to get interesting towards the end when the spiritualism things happened, but that storyline wasn't followed at all. It was just an insane thing that happened and then was dropped completely.

I wonder if the Netflix series flows better but I'm not sure if I want to spend the time to find out.

This book was simply a crash course in Victorian culture but with a gothic air of mystery to keep the reader's attention.

Atwood egy megtörtĂ©nt esemĂ©nyt dolgoz fel a maga egyedi mĂłdjĂĄn Ă©s elƑjönnek a szokĂĄsos tĂ©mĂĄi: nƑk a fĂ©rfitĂĄrsadalomban, helyzetĂŒk, lehetƑsĂ©geik Ă©s a tĂĄrsadalmi megĂtĂ©lĂ©s, meg annak lehetƑsĂ©ge, hogy minden nehĂ©zsĂ©g ellenĂ©re valahogy a kezĂŒkbe vegyĂ©k a sorsukat.

A törtĂ©net teli van feszĂŒltsĂ©gekkel Ă©s titkokkal, az atmoszfĂ©rĂĄja egyszerƱen nem ereszt ennyi elfojtott Ă©s korlĂĄtok közĂ© szorĂtott Ă©let Ă©s Ă©rzelem szinte minden lappal kitörni vĂĄgyik a sorok közĂŒl. Grace az egyik elbeszĂ©lƑnk egyes szĂĄm elsƑ szemĂ©lyben, rajta keresztĂŒl lĂĄtjuk, hogy mi törtĂ©nik körĂŒlötte, vissza-visszautalgat a mĂșltjĂĄra Ă©s arra is, hogy mi minden törtĂ©nt vele az elmĂșlt Ă©vekben, lakat alatt.

the content and plot was fantastic and i love the additional literary pieces from the factual records of grace marks’ incarceration to the prose pieces from emily dickinson !! however i was not a fan of the pace and i actually found it really hard to finish this. a brilliant depiction of grace’s life but i just found it to be tedious at times

I am a big Atwood fan. I love her style and imagination. I love how well she writes. I love that she's Canadian.

This book though...didn't really meet my expectations. I had a hard time being interested in the characters in the second half of the book. I can't pin point why, just that I found myself bored and in a hurry to get the book over with. It's a pity really, it is a great story and very well written.
