challenging informative reflective medium-paced
This book was not what I expected--in a good way. Perhaps because of the cover or the title or its ubiquity in bookstores, I came to it with some assumptions about what I would learn, and those assumptions were quickly overturned by the complexity of the subject matter and the academic voice that Odell writes with. I've always considered myself to be an "indoor person"--someone who doesn't like to be dirty or sweaty or sunburned (the latter of which happens too easily). And now, for the first time, probably since I was a kid, I feel a sense of curiosity about my bioregion. Odell explains in a meandering but powerful way how essential that is to resisting the capitalistic attack on our attention. The material (and the vocabulary) of this book could be challenging at times, but I think that was frequently a good thing. This is a book that I really want to spend my time processing and figuring out how to implement what I've learned.
